FIERCE FLORA

CARNIVOROUS PLANTS of SOUTH-WEST WESTERN AUSTRALIA.
IS ARMADALE THE CARNIVOROUS PLANT HOTSPOT OF THE WORLD?

Carnivorous plants flourish in nutrient-poor soils as they trap animal prey and digest it with specially adapted leaves to supplement deficiencies. There are over 200 species in Western Australia, and 151 species in the South Western Botanical Province with more to be described. The Armadale Region alone has 42 recorded species, and probably 50.

Armadale boasts 36 species of Drosera (sundews), 5 Utricularia (bladderworts), and Byblis gigantea (rainbow plant).

The Wildflower Society, Armadale Branch will host a Carnivorous Plants of south-west WA photographic exhibition  at the Environmental Centre, Triton Crescent, Bedfordale from 10th to 18th May. Curated by Thilo Krueger, this display of over 150 photos will showcase the unique beauty of each species, with accompanying text explaining important features. Running concurrently with City of Armadale’s “Art on the Scarp”, emphasis will be given to aesthetic aspects of these intriguing plants.

The inter-relationship of Drosera with arthropods as herbivores, prey, pollinators and parasites will be explored, and presented as interactive material to younger visitors.

The exhibition is free, open daily from 10:00 am till 2:00 pm, and supported by the City of Armadale.

Art on the Scarp

Where nature becomes art! Formerly the Armadale Arts Bush Trail, this is a celebration of sustainable creativity at the foot of the picturesque Perth Hills. Professional artists, local schools and community groups have all used nature as both a canvas and a medium to create striking artworks using exclusively natural materials from the area.

Meander around the trail to explore the works amongst the serene bushlands surrounding the Environmental Centre. Vote for your favourite work in the People’s Choice Award and keep an eye on the City of Armadale socials for giveaways and activities offered across the weekends!
