September Perth Branch Meeting featuring Byron Lamont

14 September, 2021 @ 8:00 pm - 9:30 pm

The Perth Branch will be holding our next General Meeting at the Subiaco Community Centre on Tuesday 14 September, featuring a presentation by Byron Lamont: “Australian Plants in 3D”.

Distinguished Professor Emeritus Byron Lamont retired as Professor of Plant Ecology at Curtin University, Perth, Western Australia, in 2010. He has a lifelong interest in the natural history of southwestern Australia, especially how its flora and fauna have adapted to the long summer droughts, poor soils, unique pollinators and herbivores, and fire in this biodiversity ‘hotspot’ part of the world.

In this talk E/Prof Lamont will show that the Australian flora is only understood if we view it in 3 dimensions. Those dimensions are: 1) the prevailing environment, especially climate, soil and topography, 2) the fitful occurrences of disturbances, such as cyclonic winds and floods, to the prevailing environment, and 3) biotic interactions between plants and animals and plants and other plants.

Daviesia epiphylla, endemic to the northern sandplains, illustrates unusual adaptations in 3D compared with legumes in other parts of the world: it is strongly adapted to drought having no leaves (just green, flattened stems, phylloclades), it resprouts after fire, and its 3-cm long flowers are pollinated by birds (not insects).
