WSWA Conference Presentation – Restoring Nature’s Palette: Propagation Science for Perth’s Wildflowers – Dr Shane Turner
Dr Shane Turner is a Senior Research Fellow at Curtin University with over 20 years of experience in native plant propagation science and restoration. His expertise spans seed ecology, threatened species conservation, orchid propagation, cryogenics, and the rehabilitation of minesites and urban bushland. Shane is part of the newly established Native Seed Technology and Innovation Hub for Western Australia, supported by Lotterywest, Curtin University, and 10 industry and Aboriginal-led partner organisations. He has published over 100 scientific works and supervised more than 40 researchers and students, helping translate cutting-edge science into practical conservation and restoration outcomes across the state.
This talk explores how scientific research is helping unlock the propagation secrets of native plant species found on the Swan Coastal Plain. It will highlight how insights into native seed biology and tissue culture are being used to support the conservation and restoration of these biodiverse communities. Case studies will showcase how this knowledge is applied in practice, from improving overall germination success to the specialised propagation of critical framework species.
