York Branch

The York Branch is based in the area around York. The group is active in propagating and planting activities and hold an annual plant sale – the fruits of their propagating success. Propagation workshops are held regularly.

The York Branch also maintains a native garden found in the centre of York which demonstrates how a waterwise garden can flourish in our dry summer/wet winter climate.

16ha of Shire land on the outskirts of town has been developed as a seed orchard over the past 20 years by members. It is now producing sufficient seed to be of commercial interest so should soon give some return for the work that has been put in.

Annual plant sales are held in May and June at the Peace Park Markets in York.

The following video, presented by members of the York Branch, provides a preview of the stunning flowers and plants of the Avon and surrounding areas as displayed in the Bushland Garden in York Western Australia.   It includes a number of local rare and endangered plants and features some of the local birdlife.

Exciting Developments at the York Bushland Garden and Seed Orchard

The York Branch of Wildflower Society of WA is thrilled to announce we have been successful in obtaining a Lotterywest grant of $41,000 to complete upgrades to both our York Seed Orchard and York Bushland Garden.

Our nursery is to be extended (increasing growing capacity by 50%) to supply the growing demand from community members and local shire with waterwise and dry climate WA native species.

A small tractor is to be purchased to enable our volunteers to carry out weed management with our flail mower, funded through a small community grant with the Shire of York. We aim to reduce chemical use and build healthier soils. Additional infrastructure will also be added to increase the efficiency of our activities e.g. Water tanks and shelving.

In addition, we were super lucky to receive an additional $20,000 through the Mary Bremner Bequest Grant Program to build a much-needed shed in our Seed Orchard to house equipment and support volunteer activities.

A huge thank you to Lotterywest for choosing to partner with us and support our venture, and to the Shire of York for your continued support of our community activities.

SEPTEMBER 2025

We now have a beautiful big shed to store our gear and process our seed. Built by volunteers with the help of local expertise Peter Bailey, Kerry Bell, Kevin Smith, Woorooloo work party and Jake Lewis. Some finishing touches like signage to go – but YES , it’s done.

OFFICIAL OPENING OF THE YORK SEED ORCHARD SHED  4th OCTOBER

The Branch will be celebrating this milestone with a small ceremony followed by a barbecue, for all those involved with the project.

York Branch of the Wildflower Society of WA would like to sincerely thank the MARY BREMNER TRUST for the funds to help build our shed.
It will enable our community group to store equipment and carry out seed processing of native species collected in the seed orchard.
These are for use in nurseries and gardens to create sustainable revegetation areas into the future.
