Guest Speaker: Dr Katinka Ruthrof – Climate change impacts on the Northern Jarrah Forest
1 September, 2022 @ 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm
The Northern Jarrah Forest is an incredibly resilient ecosystem. However, it is responding to drought and heatwaves in vulnerable locations.
Dr Katinka Ruthrof is the Senior Research Scientists in the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (DBCA). Previously, she was a Research Scientist at Murdoch University. Katinka undertakes research into forest health and responses to climate change, and what some of our mitigation options may be.
“I was interested in restoration of degraded ecosystems, and worked on minesite rehabilitation for my Honours project, then researched invasive and endemic eucalypt ecology for my PhD. Then I worked on rehabilitation of degraded Tuart woodlands with a wonderful group of volunteers, until the 2010-2011 drought/heatwave in this region, when our attention turned to how our forest responded to such an extreme event.”
“There are wonderful and amazing banksia woodland patches embedded within the northeast of the northern jarrah forest”
Katinka has also worked on Christmas Island on a project investigating the post-mining transition to agriculture. She also tells us she is a local, having grown up in Cockburn and now living on a property next to Jilbup (Thomsons Lake).
Please join us to hear Katinka’s talk.
Doors open at 7:30pm. Entry only $3 with supper and door prizes.
